Terms of Use
The short version. Practice is free. Scan credits are what you pay for. Only scan music you have the right to use, and keep your own copies of anything important.
Agreement
These terms are a contract between you and Starnova, Vietnam (“we”, “us”) for the Barline app (the “App”). By installing or using the App you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
Licence
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Barline on Apple devices you own or control, for as long as you follow these terms. You may not copy, resell, rent, reverse engineer or attempt to extract the source code of the App or its recognition service, except where that restriction is void under the law that applies to you.
Your music
You keep every right to the sheet music you scan and to the scores the App makes from it. You grant us only the licence needed to read the pages you send and to store the resulting score for you. You are responsible for having the right to scan and practise the music you upload; do not upload material you are not permitted to reproduce.
What is free and what costs credits
Practising, looping, tempo control, the metronome, listening and MusicXML import are free. Reading pictures of music — a photo or a PDF page — uses one scan credit per page. New installs receive a small number of credits, and a small number is added each month. A page that we fail to read is refunded automatically. Credits have no cash value and cannot be transferred.
Barline Plus and packs
Barline Plus is an auto-renewing subscription, billed monthly or yearly through your Apple Account at the price shown in the App for your country. It includes a monthly allowance of scan pages and everything marked as part of Plus. Payment is charged at confirmation. It renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Manage or cancel it in your Apple Account settings — uninstalling the App does not cancel a subscription. Unused monthly pages do not carry over.
Page packs are one-time purchases of scan credits that never expire and are not refunded when unused. Lifetime, where offered, is a one-time purchase of Plus for as long as the App is available. None of these renew.
Prices vary by country and may change; a change never affects a period you have already paid for. Refunds are handled by Apple under its own policy, not by us.
Recognition is not perfect
Music recognition makes mistakes, which is why the App shows you the bars it was unsure about and lets you fix them. We do not promise that a score is accurate, complete or fit for performance, and you should check it against the original before relying on it.
Acceptable use
Do not use Barline to break the law, to infringe someone else's rights, or to interfere with the service — for example by circumventing credit checks, automating scans, or sending the service anything other than sheet music.
Availability and changes
We may add, change or remove features, and we may suspend the service for maintenance. We will not deliberately remove something you have already paid for during a period you have paid for. Scores you have opened are cached on your device and keep working offline.
No warranty
Barline is provided “as is”. We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that listening will score every note correctly. Keep your own copies of important sheet music; a practice app is not a backup.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, or lost or damaged data, and our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, including your statutory consumer rights.
Ending this agreement
You may stop using Barline at any time by deleting it. We may end your licence if you materially breach these terms.
Apple App Store
- This agreement is between you and Starnova only, not with Apple, and Apple is not responsible for Barline or its content.
- Apple has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for Barline.
- If Barline fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price; to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation.
- Starnova, not Apple, is responsible for claims relating to Barline, including product liability, legal compliance and intellectual property claims.
- You confirm you are not located in a country embargoed by the U.S. government and are not on a prohibited-parties list.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Vietnam, without affecting any mandatory consumer protections of the country you live in.
