Privacy Policy
The short version. Barline has no accounts and no sign-in. The only thing that leaves your phone is the page of sheet music you ask us to read, and it is deleted once it has been read. Your playing is analysed on your device; we never receive audio.
Who we are
Barline (the “App”) is provided by Starnova, Vietnam (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what the App collects, why, and what you can do about it.
Sheet music you scan
When you photograph a page or import a PDF, the App splits it into pages on your device and sends only the pages you chose to our server, where music recognition turns them into a score. The page images are held in memory for as long as the recognition takes and are not kept afterwards. The resulting score (notes, bars and tempo — not the picture) is stored on our server so it opens on your phone again, and a copy is cached on your device so it works offline. MusicXML files you import are processed the same way, without any image.
Your playing stays on your device
If you allow microphone access, the App listens while you play so it can say which notes and which bars need work. Pitch and timing are detected on your device. Audio is never recorded, stored or sent to us. What we receive is a short summary of a practice pass — which bars were looped, the tempo, whether the pass was clean and, when listening was on, a note-accuracy figure — so your progress screen can show it.
What the App does collect
- An anonymous install identifier. The App creates a random visitor id on first launch. It is what your scan credits, your library and your practice progress are attached to. It is not your name, email, phone number or device serial, and it is not linked to any account.
- Purchase state. Subscriptions and packs are processed by Apple. Our payments provider, RevenueCat, tells us that a purchase, renewal, cancellation or restore happened, tied to the anonymous identifier. We never receive your card details, billing address or Apple Account.
- Feature usage events. We record that an action happened — a page was scanned, a loop was practised, the upgrade screen was seen — together with the anonymous identifier, using Firebase / Google Analytics. These events contain no music, no audio and no personal details. The App does not use the advertising identifier and does not ask to track you.
- Ordinary server logs. Requests to our server are logged with an IP address, timestamp and the endpoint called, which we use to keep the service running and to detect abuse. Logs are kept for a short period and are not used to build a profile of you.
What we never collect
- Audio of you playing, or anything derived from it beyond the per-pass summary above.
- Your name, email address, phone number or contacts — there is no account to put them in.
- Your photo library. Only the picture you pick is read, and only for recognition.
- Your precise location, health, financial or biometric data.
Why we are allowed to do this
Where the GDPR or a similar law applies: scanning, storing your scores and progress, and purchase data are processed to perform our contract with you; usage events and server logs rest on our legitimate interest in keeping the App working and understanding which features are used.
Sharing
We do not sell personal data. We share only what is described above, with the providers that make those features work: Apple (payments and distribution), RevenueCat (purchase state) and Google (Firebase Analytics). These providers operate internationally, so data may be processed outside your country under the safeguards they publish.
Your choices
- Microphone. Listening is optional. Refuse the permission or turn it off later in Settings; practice, looping and the tempo ramp work without it.
- Delete a song. Deleting a score in the App removes it from our server too.
- Delete everything. Deleting the App removes the anonymous identifier and all local data. Send us the visitor id shown in the App under Account and we will delete the scores and progress attached to it on our side.
- Access requests. Because the data is anonymous we cannot find “your” records without that id. Send it to us and we will act on it.
Children
Barline is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has used the App and you want the associated data removed, contact us.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects you, we will update the effective date above and, where the change is significant, say so in the App.
